Limitations
The MELD score is not intended for use in patients under 12 years of age, those with acute liver failure, or for predicting mortality outside the context of end-stage liver disease. The laboratory values used in the calculation are capped to prevent extreme scores from single outliers (creatinine 4.0 mg/dL for the original MELD and MELD-Na, and 3.0 mg/dL for MELD 3.0; bilirubin and INR at a minimum of 1.0).
